Insights On Reality Rap And Rap Censorship

Some individuals thought that reality rap has done a great deal to our society; hence our society has improved. Laws are stated for music censorship. Some also think that rap censorship is wrong; there are cases, songs, as well as interview to prove them. It seems that priorities are just in the wrong order. For them, censoring rap is against the law. Rap artists have every legal right to voice themselves in any way they want to. Rap music has been good to the society. Rap music has informed individuals about black culture. Individuals always discover what is the bad thing about rap through the mass media. They never find out what good it does.

Rap is the top selling type of music nowadays. Rap has introduced individuals a whole new sense of pride and a new form of self expression. Rap has brought black kids and white kids closer together. Because of rap, white children are getting a better understanding as well as a new respect for black culture. Rap has done nothing but bring the people together. It’s the individuals who don’t understand the music or the culture which are creating problems. Music artists, recording companies and fans are all concerned with the issue of music censorship. All of these individuals are pitted against the government officials and community organizations who are trying to stamp out what’s thought to be obscenity in popular music. Issues arise in looking for a sufficient meaning of obscenity as it pertains to art.

The Supreme Court definition for obscenity in art was attained in the 1973 case entitled Miller versus California. In that case, it was decided that obscenity is a community issue and that it must be determined on the basis of local, as opposed to federal, standards. Additionally, the Supreme Court made a decision that, in order for a product to be obscene, it has to be patently offensive and it also must appeal to prurient interests and lack serious artistic merit. Controversies surface in looking for a definition for what constitutes artistic merit.

Although reality rap is gaining negative reputation due to the rap artists’ lifestyle, there are rappers who don’t utilize profanity and violence in their own lyrics, like Will Smith. Good rap doesn’t have to be vulgar. Audiences observe how much of a good role model Will Smith is with his positive lyrics. If someone chooses to make bad music, you do have a choice to listen to it, or not. You also have a choice between mimicking the lyrics, {or not`or otherwise}. All you do is under your discretion.
